TPS for Syria Comes to an End: What Employers Need to Know

In a move that would affect thousands of workers and their employers, the Ministry of Internal Security (DHS) ended the appointment of the temporary protected case (TPS) of Syria. The advertisement, published in the Federal Registry on September 22, 2025, represents the end of the humanitarian protection that existed for Syrian citizens.

The government has noticed a change in the circumstances of the country that would allow Syrians to return to their country: “The Secretary decided that while some intermittent and frozen violence occurs in Syria, the situation no longer meets the criteria of the ongoing armed conflict that poses a serious threat to the personal safety of the return of clinical citizens.

The federal registry continued to cite the concerns of national security as a reason for the end: “Given the continuous naming of Syria as a state of terrorism and the lack of access to the information that can be verified, the United States cannot sufficiently examine Syrian citizens for identity, criminal history or potential terrorist interference, which represents a continuous threat to national security and security.”

Main dates and immediate effects

The current TPS for Syria will end on September 30, 2025, with the start of the effect on November 21, 2025. After this date, Syrian citizens who have previously TPS will lose their protection from removal, and cash for employers, their work license.

DHS estimates that 6,123 individuals are currently carrying TPS under the name of Syria. These individuals are now facing a 60 -day departure window, which started on September 19, 2025, after which they may undergo enforcement, including arrest and deportation.

EAD automatic extensions: What employers should know

The Ministry of National Security automatically expanded some employment licensing documents (EADS) until November 21, 2025. This extension applies only to EADS:

  • Contains category A-12 or C-19 codes
  • You have an original expiration date:

Labor employees should consult USCis guidelines on EAD automatic extensions and ensure update I-9 update. This is a critical compliance step to avoid possible penalties and ensure the continued tracking of the work license.

Preparation for the deadline on November 21

Employers must now start the veneration process. This is what we recommend:

  • I-9 audit form to identify employees affected by the termination of TPS.
  • Dates for the expiration of the path and set repetition reminders by November 21, 2025.
  • Communicate with affected employees to explore alternative immigration options, such as asylum, modify the situation, or care for employment.

Hanging TPS applications: There is no safe port

As of September 8, 2025, 833 TPS applications under the name of Syria are still pending. More importantly, the suspended application does not give work permission. Employers should not rely on receipt notifications (for example, the I-797C model) as evidence of the continuation of the eligibility of employment.

Final ideas

The end of the appointment of TPS in Syria is part of a broader shift in the DHS policy, in the wake of the last sunset to protect TPS in Venezuela. For employers, this is a reminder of the importance of pre -emptive compliance with immigration and strategic planning for the workforce.
